President Donald Trump's administration announced that it would maintain the government's free program shortly before the scheduled closure of the free coronavirus testing website in the United States, COVIDtests.gov.
"We are currently in the process of conducting regular discussions regarding the closure of this round of the COVID-19 test ordering program, as COVID-19 infections have decreased following a winter peak." Andrew Nixon, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, stated in a statement that the program is currently open and that he will provide further updates as required.

Internal documents indicate that HHS officials were contemplating whether to continue distributing COVID tests to American households or to eliminate the more than 160 million that were currently in circulation. The stockpile (ASPR) is overseen by the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response.
"It is costly to accumulate these tests." During an interview with The Post, Dawn O'Connell, the ASPR administrator during the Biden administration, stated, "Destruction incurs substantial expenses, but their preservation incurs substantial expenses."
More than 2 billion free tests have been administered by ASPR since January 2020, with 900 million of these tests being administered directly to families through the U.S. Postal Service and COVIDtests.gov.
Since its inception, the application has experienced numerous restarts and interruptions, as well as seven shutdowns.
